From May 6-10, Canada is “giving it up for hunger”.

In an effort to raise awareness of hunger in Canada, Food Banks across the country are holding events in their local communities as they tell the stories of hungry Canadians who rely on their services month after month. A week-long initiative, this campaign seeks to challenge Canadians to learn more about the issue of hunger and take action in their community.

As we prepare to embark on our cross-country tour, this initiative hits home with our organization. In a three-week trip across the country, Five Hole for Food helps support 13 food bank organizations in 13 different cities. One short trip. One large impact. One new goal, set to be released in the coming month.

In our first Saskatoon rumble, we’re very excited to drop the puck in this city. We’re shutting down 23rd Street on May 25th to play ball hockey for the Food Bank and, in true Memorial Cup theme, we’ll host a quick draft to form four teams. Join us from 5:00PM-7:00PM as we bring road hockey to Saskatoon.

Saskatoon, will you play hockey for food?

On June 8th from 2:00PM to 5:00PM, we’ll set-up rinks at Stuart Park and invite supporters from Kelowna, BC to bring their hockey sticks and cans of food as we collect donations for the Kelowna Food Bank.

About the Kelowna Food Bank
In 1983, the Kelowna Community Food Bank Society set up operation in an effort to meet the emergency food needs of their community. Like many Food Banks across Canada, temporary help became a permanent community service. In the ensuing decades, the Kelowna Food Bank has grown from serving 600 people per year to nearly 40,000, with nearly 40% of them children under age 16. The Kelowna Food Bank’s innovative approach to nutrition has led them to launch the Nutrition Improvement programming (NIP), with more than half of their recipients qualifying for the program.

Our first experience south of the border was eventful. From delayed flights to camping in an airport overnight, the travel down to Austin presented us with challenges; though, once we landed in Texas, the buzz of SXSW had us ready to roar.

Through a partnership with HootSuite, the Dallas Stars and the Texas Stars to support the Austin Food Bank, #HootHockey quickly emerged as the place to be on this sunny Sunday afternoon. With the incredible work that the Dallas Stars and Texas Stars have done to promote hockey in the Central Texas Area, fans were drawn to a busy rink in the middle of a Austin parking lot.

With all the proceeds going to the Austin Food Bank, there was some fierce competition at this rink. In the end, team HootSuite took the crown, with the help of Owly and ringer Guy Kawasaki. The best news? #HootHockey raised 7,500 lbs of food for the Austin Food Bank.

From all of us at Five Hole for Food, thank you to HootSuite, the Dallas Stars and the Texas Stars for their help in making this dream a reality. We’re excited to return to SXSW next year!

During the weekend of the Beaver Cup, we hope to fuse the passion of hockey with charity through two-days of pond hockey and the donation of food items. In partnership with the Ottawa Food Bank, supporters and participants will be encouraged to bring their non-perishable food items to the event.

“This is about as true to the game of hockey as it gets,” says Five Hole for Food CEO Richard Loat. “Playing pond hockey on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa is pure. I think the opportunity to generate awareness and donations for the Ottawa Food Bank is tremendous.”

The Beaver Cup features a 4-on-4 pond hockey tournament on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa. Celebrating their 5th Anniversary, the Beaver Cup entertains 50 teams, 400 players and 1 cup. With Mens and Women’s Open Rec divisions and a PeeWee division, the Beaver Cup hosts players of all ages for this Canadian event.

From 10:00AM to 7:00PM, we’ll be under the iconic 6.5 acre pine-wood roof of the Oval in celebration of the sport held nearest and dearest to the hearts of Canadians. With appearances from a number of NHL legends, ball hockey games, musical performances and more, this free event promises to entertain adults and children alike.

This year, we’re beyond thrilled to have a Five Hole for Food event booth located under that massive pine roof. We’ll have our devoted volunteers on-site, ready to provide information about 2013′s Summer Tour, promote our famous t-shirts and take you through our ‘Shooter Tutor’, an interactive set-up that tests your slap shot accuracy.

Our volunteers will also be located at the front entrance of the Richmond Olympic Oval as we’ve partnered with the Richmond Food Bank to collect non-perishable food donations.

From 10:00AM to 7:00PM on February 9th, be sure to swing by the Richmond Olympic Oval with your food donation and a smile. It’s Hockey Day in Canada!
